‘Ayurveda is both effective, cheap’

Across the country, the number of patients choosing ayurvedic medicines over allopathic medicines has grown sharply, ayurvedic doctors at an event on Sunday said.
Talking to TOI, Dr C D Shadevan, retired senior medical officer, government of Kerala, said five years ago only 10 out of 100 patients would prefer ayurvedic treatment. Now, about 40 go for ayurvedic treatment.
A city-based ayurveda healing centre organized a national seminar on the role of ayurveda in developing Bihar "Ayur Yatra - A journey with Ayurveda" at S K Memorial Hall here.
"Today over 40 out of 100 patients take ayurvedic medicines. It is because ayurvedic treatment is systematic and allopathic treatment symptomatic," Shadevan added.
Quite a few patients suffering from cancer, arthritis, infertility, thyroid and hepatitis B come to Kerala for treatment. "Ayurvedic treatment consists of plant-based medicines which do not lead to generation of other diseases. It is unlike allopathic treatment which causes a lot of side effects," he told TOI.
Shadevan also said that by opening ayurvedic healing centres, Bihar can tap potential of ayurvedic doctors in Bihar.
Consultant physician doctor Dr Bhadran C K said ayurveda addresses root causes, it also induces regeneration of cells, it is inexpensive. "Once you complete the medicinal course of ayurveda, you need not take any more medicine," Bhadran said.
The main hurdle in ayurveda is that patients need to strictly maintain food restrictions which doctors prescribe. "One needs to maintain food restrictions only during the course of medicines. Thereafter, life is good," he added.
Earlier, deputy CM Sushil Kumar Modi felicitated noted doctors Dr A K Thakur (allopathic), Dr C D Shadevan, and Dr S A Raja (homeopathic). In his speech, Modi said: "It is our wish that the facility of ayurvedic treatment becomes a chapter in the development story of Bihar. The government will provide all possible support to open colleges of ayurveda."
